United are pursuing Ronaldo in an attempt to bring him back to Old Trafford after he left in 2009 for a world record fee of £80 million. United have been given encouragement from Ronaldo that he would consider a return to the club should he leave Real, Pérez has made it clear that he expects the Portugal captain to remain at the Bernabéu for the rest of his career.
Ronaldo wants to retire at Real Madrid, and we want him to retire here, just like Zidane and so many other great players did,” Pérez said. “You can be absolutely certain that Cristiano will retire at Real Madrid.- said Florentino Pérez
However, United are not giving up on their ex-star and they still want to re-sign Cristiano. Outgoing boss Sir Alex Ferguson made no secret of wanting to see former World Player of the Year Ronaldo come back to Old Trafford.
When United met Madrid in the Champions League earlier this season, Ferguson said:
"Was I tempted to bring him back? Yes. He’s still in the hamper."

Ronaldo wore United's jersey for 6 years in which he scored 84 goals in 196 appearances. He was the first Portuguese player in United when he signed from Sporting Lisbon for 15 million euros. When he came in Manchester Fergie asked him what number he would like to wear and he said 28. But Ferguson replied:
"No, you're going to have No.7" - and then Ronaldo was forced to wear the famous
Manchester United's No.7, previously worn by George Best, Bryan Robson, Eric Cantona and David Beckham.

Of course Fergie would like his star man back because with Ronaldo in the team United won the Premier League and the Champions League in 2008, and that are not the only trophies he's won with United. He's won many more team trophies whit United, and also many personal trophies like Ballon d'Or.

Now, in Madrid, Ronaldo has an amazing record of scoring 146 goals in 135 appearances. That is simply astonishing. That means Ronaldo has an average score of 1.08 goals per match. That is what every top scorer hopes for. To have an average score of more that one goal per match is something that you don't come across everyday. That's because Ronaldo has changed his style of play. He played more as a winger in United, but in Madrid he is more like a center forward. And as a center forward he gets much more scoring chances, and with Ronaldo's ability of dribbling and scoring he don't miss often. That is the main reason for that awesome record of average scoring rate higher than a goal per match.

All that hope by United of re-signing their top man will probably disappear because Pérez is now planning to meet Ronaldo during Real’s four‑game tour of the United States and offer to make him the world’s highest-paid player with a package in excess of the £330,000 a week earned by Samuel Eto’o at Anzhi Makhachkala.
